Strengthening Tourism Statistics and Data Systems in The Gambia
26th May 2026
Implementation of the Action Plan for Improvement of Tourism Statistics is continuing in The Gambia through the Tourism Diversification and Resilience in The Gambia Project (TDRGP), funded by the World Bank.
The project is focused on strengthening tourism data collection, analysis and reporting systems to support evidence-based planning, destination management and investment decisions across the tourism sector.
As part of the latest phase of work, Acorn Tourism Consulting delivered training to the Gambia Tourism Board and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture on the use of the Management Information System for Tourism (MIST), the country's Management Information System for Tourism, developed using the T-Stats tourism intelligence platform. The training focused on the practical use of the system for collecting, managing and analysing tourism data from a range of sources.

Meetings were also held with the Gambia Immigration Department to support the integration of visitor arrivals data into MIST. Improving coordination between institutions and harmonising data sources will help strengthen the accuracy and consistency of tourism statistics, providing a clearer picture of visitor movements and tourism performance.
The visit also included training with the Gambia Bureau of Statistics on the compilation of a Tourism Satellite Account (TSA). This work will support the measurement of tourism's direct contribution to the national economy and provide a stronger evidence base for future tourism policy and investment decisions.
The project brings together a range of institutions involved in tourism, statistics and border management, helping establish a more coordinated and sustainable approach to tourism intelligence and sector monitoring in The Gambia.
