Circular and Resilient Tourism on Small Islands and in Coastal Destinations
1st July 2023
Acorn is working with Buro Happold on this World Bank PROBLUE funded study looking into the establishment of circular and resilient tourism on small islands and in coastal destinations. The countries involved are Saõ Tomé and Principe, Cape Verde and Gambia.
This project aims to improve the World Bank's understanding of how small island developing states (SIDS) and small coastal nations can increase their tourism competitiveness in the wake of COVID-19 through more sustainable and resilient tourism practices.
Our role in the project is to bring our tourism expertise to undertake consultations with tourism businesses in all three destinations, in particular focussing on accommodation, restaurants and tour operators, to assess the level of use of single use plastics, general waste, energy and water, as well as individual business aspirations to embrace sustainable alternatives.
Overall, the project seeks to support SIDS in adopting solutions to improve the circularity of their economies and reduce single-use plastics.
