Developing Bird Watching Travel Products for SMEs

Bird watching is one of the most popular outdoor leisure activities in the world today and many European birders are keen to travel to long-haul destinations to view exotic bird species high on their birding bucket list. The bird watching tourism segment was the focus for Acorn Tourism’s latest report for the CBI, part of the Netherlands Enterprise Centre, to support local tour operators and SMEs in developing countries create sustainable bird watching experiences.
Designed to help local SMEs throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America, the locations of some of the foremost birding destinations, to develop sustainable bird watching tourism experiences. Newly published, the guide covers a wide range of issues to help local tour operators and offers practical advice on how to implement robust health and safety protocols to keep their customers safe as tourism resumes following the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also stressed the importance of using local, experienced and knowledgeable guides, and how to incorporate sustainability into all areas of the business. Profiles of European birders were also provided along with analysis of key competing destinations in terms of high bird diversity and best practice.
The report is part of a series of studies commissioned by the CBI and draws on Acorn Tourism’s extensive market research expertise to support the development of sustainable tourism initiatives worldwide.
