Strengthening Tourism Data in São Tomé and Príncipe
7th August 2025
Acorn Tourism Consulting is proud to support the Direção-Geral do Turismo e Hotelaria (DGTH) as São Tomé and Príncipe plans a sustainable future for its visitor economy. Now starting our third field mission, this World Bank-funded Coastal Resilience and Sustainable Tourism Investment Project (WACA+) is building the skills, systems and partnerships needed so tourism growth also protects the islands’ nature and culture.
Why this matters
Good tourism data guides everything, from marketing budgets to protecting beaches and forests. By improving data flows and digital communication, São Tomé and Príncipe can show the world its special heritage while making sure local communities share the benefits.
What we have achieved so far
A new visitor survey, set for 2026, will give clearer facts on what travellers do and how much they spend. Recent training has helped local teams collect, organise and understand tourism data more easily. In addition, we demonstrated a simple live dashboard through T-Stats to show how up-to-date numbers can inform decisions across government and business.
Looking ahead
Our September mission will turn data into clear reporting and engaging stories, broaden DGTH’s online reach and refine audience profiles, so future messages speak to key markets while celebrating the islands’ true character.
A collaborative journey
Working with DGTH, the Central Bank, WACA+ and many other partners has been inspiring. Together, we are laying the ground for data-driven tourism that safeguards São Tomé and Príncipe’s extraordinary landscapes for generations to come.
