Review of Oman’s Adventure Tourism Sector
14th April 2026
At Acorn Tourism Consulting, we’ve been working on a two-phase programme exploring the development of adventure tourism in Oman, combining international best practice with in-country insight.

The first phase focused on the UK, looking at how a mature adventure tourism market is supported through strong coordination, good data, clear safety standards and well-managed access to natural environments. This provided a useful benchmark to guide the next stage of the work.
The next stage included an in-depth review of Oman’s adventure tourism market. In February, Alison Burgh and Alice Gill travelled to Oman to carry out in-country research and stakeholder engagement. This was a great opportunity to meet a wide range of people across the sector, from public bodies and private operators to community groups, to better understand how adventure tourism is developing on the ground.

Alongside these discussions, we visited a variety of sites across the country, experiencing firsthand the diversity of Oman’s landscapes, from mountains and deserts to coastal areas. These visits helped bring the research to life and gave us a deeper understanding of both the opportunities and challenges.

What stood out most during the visit was the strength of Oman’s overall offer. The scale and diversity of its natural landscapes, combined with a strong sense of culture and welcoming communities, create a compelling foundation for tourism. At the same time, the country remains relatively uncrowded and underdeveloped in adventure terms, presenting a clear opportunity to shape distinctive, high-quality adventure and nature-based experiences that feel authentic to the place
