Tourism Sector Support in the Falklands
21st June 2021
Just like every other country, the Falkland Islands’ tourism sector has suffered from the lack of international visitors over the last year. However, unlike most other countries, turning to domestic tourism with a population of only 3,500 people didn’t look like an obvious solution.
However, the Falkland Islands Government developed a Tourism Recovery Incentive Programme (TRIP) for local residents, offering them £500 vouchers to spend in accommodation, restaurants, on tours, and even in shops, to give the sector a much needed boost. Take-up of the scheme was impressive, with over 80% of the population registering, and voucher allocation exceeding £1.3 million.
Acorn has been working with the Falkland Islands Tourist Board (FITB) to assess the level of engagement with the scheme, what additional travel it encouraged over and above usual domestic travel, and opinions of a similar scheme in future seasons.
