Tourism Satellite Account for Papua New Guinea
21st June 2021
Acorn is delighted to be working with the Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA) to develop a first Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) for the country. The TSA follows a methodology recommended by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) that measures the economic impact of tourism using the same concepts, classifications and definitions as for other sectors of the economy. One of the key outputs is tourism direct gross value added and tourism’s contribution to GDP.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Papua New Guinea was attracting over 210,000 tourists each year, with Australia accounting for almost 50% of these. The TSA will be compiled using a base year that preceded the Pandemic, which will provide PNG with an understanding of what tourism will contribute to the economy when travel recovers to pre-pandemic levels.
Acorn has previously worked in PNG as part of a South Pacific Tourism Organisation study, assisting its member states to measure tourism more effectively, in particular through air, cruise and yacht visitor surveys. This study will build upon that previous work.
