Will this summer be a record breaker for domestic tourism?
14th April 2021
With a combination of pent-up demand for holidays, the likelihood of domestic trips replacing those usually taken overseas, and renewed optimism in the British weather following four years of above average levels of sunshine, tourism development experts Acorn have been assessing the potential of a record-breaking summer for domestic holidays in Great Britain.
Combining a specially commissioned survey of residents across Great Britain and their tourism forecasting expertise, Acorn predicts that domestic holiday spend over June, July and August will reach £5.73 billion, just £250 million short of the record-breaking summer of 2019. Whilst trips are expected to be down to 20.7 million, compared to 22.1 million in 2019, average spend per night of holiday tourists is forecast to rise by £2.30 to over £73.50.
Despite the strong bounce-back expected in the second half of 2021, the survey showed a split between those consumers still wary about booking and taking trips due to the uncertain nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, and those who are taking well above the average number of trips due to limited opportunities to travel in 2020 and overseas.
