About
Summary:
Acorn Tourism Consulting Ltd, was commissioned to design, deliver, and analyse a Business Sector Sustainability Scan (BSSS) of tourism businesses across the North York Moors National Park. The purpose was to evaluate baseline sustainability performance, inform the selection of 15 businesses for a pilot initiative, and provide recommendations to drive improvements across the sector. The project aligns with NYMNP’s sustainability strategy and its partnership with VisitBritain/VisitEngland to grow international markets through low-carbon travel.
Our Approach:
We developed a tailored online survey based on the internationally recognised Good Travel Scan criteria, aligned with the GSTC framework. The survey was distributed to over 600 businesses through direct invitations, newsletters, and social media. Data was analysed across 10 sustainability themes, including waste, water, climate, culture, and accessibility. Sector-wide findings, individual business scorecards, and policy recommendations were provided in a final report.
Outcomes:
-
63 businesses participated across diverse sectors including accommodation, food and drink, attractions, and tours.
-
The average sustainability score was 39%, with strong performance in waste reduction, cultural preservation, and local sourcing.
-
Gaps were identified in pollution prevention, climate action, accessibility, and sustainability communication.
-
22 businesses scored over 50% and were recommended as potential participants in the upcoming pilot project.
-
The report provided targeted recommendations to improve sustainability performance, communications, and collaborative opportunities across the park.
