The Falkland Islands, a remote South Atlantic archipelago, has recently been selected to the 2021 Top 100 list released every year by Green Destinations.

Celebrated for their excellent Good Practice Story: “TRIPPING at home: the invention of domestic tourism in the Falkland Islands”…

The story submitted by Kevin Millington, Sustainability and Market Research Coordinator of the Falkland Islands Tourist Board, aims to share with the world how TRIP, a Tourism Recovery Incentive Programme, successfully boosted the domestic tourism industry in the destination.

"The programme created by the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) did not only provide local tourism and retail businesses with a welcome financial boost, but also positively impacted the well-being and mental health of the local population" - Kevin Millington.

Recognised for their efforts in sustainable destination management….

The Top 100 competition enables destinations to assess their performance on the Green Destinations Criteria, identified as the basics for sustainability performance from the Green Destinations Standard, recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

The Falkland Islands have achieved 85% compliance with the 15 Core Criteria that destinations need to self-report on in their first participation to the competition.

On their way towards sustainability certification…

This selection to the 2021 Top 100 list marks the first step of the Falkland Islands on their sustainability journey. They will join the Green Destinations Awards and Certification Program in the new year, assessing their performance on all 84 criteria of the Green Destinations Standard.

As Green Destinations Representative, Acorn Tourism is supporting the Falkland Islands in these initiatives through guidance and coaching on the Green Destinations Standard and programmes.
