Beaches are popular destinations for honeymoons

About

Summary

The honeymoon market in Europe is substantial and accounts for 30% of the global market. Developing countries are popular among honeymooning couples who look for unique experiences in scenic destinations to start the new chapter of their lives. The honeymoon tour operator market is also significant, as is evidenced by the large numbers of businesses serving the market, either specialist businesses or general operators with a honeymoon theme in their portfolios.

Acorn Tourism was commissioned by the CBI to undertake thorough research to help SMEs in developing countries to understand and target the potential of honeymoons so they can prepare and sell their honeymoon products to the European market.

Our Approach

Acorn Tourism undertook comprehensive research into the European honeymoon market, identifying the key European markets based on numbers of weddings that take place in the main source markets. Differences in each of the markets were highlighted, along with major trends such as the need for sustainable options, and an increasing preference for adventure honeymoons in unique and off the beaten track locations.

As well as mandatory requirements such as insurance and the need for extremely high standards to service the market, other practical advice was provided to local operators keen to target this market. Providing an excellent service was highlighted as a key requirement, to clearly understand a couple’s needs and build strong relationships through flexibility. Tips to help meet couples’ desire for sustainable and authentic experiences were also provided.

Acorn Tourism’s research highlighted the main sales channels for honeymoon products and offered profiles of some of the main competing destinations and businesses to provide context and further information.

This study accompanies a wide range of detailed business guides aimed at SMEs in developing countries commissioned by the CBI, the Netherlands Enterprise Centre, one of Acorn Tourism’s long-term clients.

Outcome

Acorn Tourism’s guide to help local tour operators all over the world develop honeymoon products sustainably provided a comprehensive study of the market with a wide range of information and practical tips.
