About
Summary
This project represents the initial phase of a two-stage programme to support the development of Oman’s adventure tourism sector. Phase 1 focused on reviewing the United Kingdom’s mature adventure tourism market to understand how the sector has evolved, including governance structures, safety and regulatory frameworks, product development, and market growth.
Through a combination of desk research and stakeholder consultations, the study identified key success factors underpinning the UK’s position as a leading adventure tourism destination. The findings provide a strong evidence base to inform Phase 2, which will assess Oman’s current landscape and identify areas for collaboration.
Our Approach
This initial phase applied a structured, evidence-led approach to build a clear understanding of the UK’s mature adventure tourism sector and identify insights relevant to emerging destinations.
The work began with detailed desk research, drawing on national strategies, policy frameworks, industry reports and market data to understand how the sector has developed over time.
Stakeholder consultations were then undertaken with a targeted group of industry bodies, operators and training organisations. These discussions provided practical insight into how the sector operates in practice, including delivery models, challenges and success factors.
The findings were brought together through a structured analysis to identify key themes, patterns and examples of good practice. Focus was placed on highlighting approaches that could be adapted in other contexts.
As the first stage of a wider programme, the methodology also established a clear benchmark and framework to guide the subsequent assessment of Oman’s adventure tourism sector and support the identification of future collaboration opportunities.
Outcome
This phase delivered a clear and evidence-based overview of the UK’s adventure tourism sector, highlighting the key factors that have supported its development.
The work provides insight into governance structures, regulatory frameworks, safety systems and product development approaches, alongside an understanding of market dynamics and growth trends. It also identifies practical lessons and examples of good practice that are relevant to destinations looking to develop their own adventure tourism offer.
Importantly, the study establishes a structured benchmark that will guide the next stage of the project, enabling a more focused assessment of Oman’s current landscape and the identification of gaps and opportunities.
The findings also highlight priority areas where international expertise and collaboration could support sector development.
